Fractions as DivisionConsidering fractions as division is not a natural association according to expert [1]. Yes, probably everybody knows that "1/4 of something" is that "something" divided by 4. For example, one quarter of an hour is 15 minutes (60 divided by 4). But what about, say, 10/4 ? Is this a division? As a matter of fact 10/4 means "ten divided by 4". Litterally. 10/4 = 10:4 = 2.5 A fraction is a division between two numbers: the "top" divided by the "bottom" (the numerator divided by the denominator) A fraction is thus ONE value
Exercise. Which number are 9/3 ? 16/4? 25/7? 1250/25?
