Converting decimals to fractions

A way for converting decimals to fractions is illustrated with these examples (for a better insight click here).

Example 1
WITH ALGORITHM

light bulb3.6 -> to fraction

  • 1.write all digits: 36
  • 2.draw the fraction sign: 36/
  • 3. put a 1 below: 36/1
  • 4. put as many "zeros" as digits after the point: 36/10

Example 2

(no more wording) light bulb

  • 4.67 -> to fraction
  • 1. 467
  • 2. 467/
  • 3. 467/1
  • 4. 467/100

Example 3

Now we deal with repeating decimals
WITH ALGORITHM

light bulb3.5 (5 repeating) -> to fraction

  • 1. Write all digits: 35
  • 2. Subtract the digits on the left-hand side of the repeating part (here there is a "3"): 35 - 3=32
  • 3. Write the fraction side 32/
  • 4. Put below as many number "9" as the number of repeating digits (here is 5 repeating just once, so I write only one "9": 32/9
  • 5.Put as many zero after the nine(s) as many digits after the dot but before the repeating part (here the 5 is not preceded by any other numbers so I leave it untouched.
  • 6. the result is 3.5 = 32/9

Example 4.

A more complex example with repeating decimals

light bulb0.43 (3 repeating) -> to fraction

  • 1. 43
  • 2. 43 - 4 = 39
  • 3. 39/
  • 4. 39/9
  • 5. 39/90

Example 5.

Again with repeating decimals

light bulb13.423 (23 repeating) -> to fraction

  • 1. 13423
  • 2. 13423 - 134 =13289
  • 3. 13289/
  • 4. 13289/99
  • 5. 13289/990

Did you get the way for converting decimals to fractions? Probably yes....

You only need to memorize the algorithm (which you will probably forget soon or later) and perhaps get some more knowledge about decimals but not much real understanding on fractions and proportional reasoning.

Here a better way to understand it. :
